2011 Award-Winning Kids’ Books

There are two distinguished awards given out each year to authors who write beautifully written stories just for children. These books are determined to be written with the best intentions to educated and entertain the youthful minds of their target readers.

The Newbery Medal is presented by the American Library Association to an author whose book as been noted that year as the greatest contribution to American literature for children. This year’s winner is Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool, a compelling story about a young girl who rides the trains with her father until he sends her to live with a friend, and the pieces of the puzzle she puts together to figure out why.

The Caldecott Medal is an honor the American Library Association bestows upon an artist who has created pages of masterpieces in a distinguished picture book for children. This year’s winner is A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip Christian Stead, a beautiful story about an elephant who loves nothing more than spending his days at the zoo with his friends, until he becomes sick and his friends decide to return the favor.
